A Warm French-Style Luxury Home on Sydney’s Upper North Shore

Sophie and Peter envisioned an elegant, grand, yet inviting French-inspired luxury residence.
Traditionally, such homes flourish on generously proportioned sites with frontages of at least 20 metres and level terrain to accentuate their symmetry, sophistication, and stately proportions. However, the chosen site presented a complex set of challenges—a steep gradient of approximately 1:5, asymmetrical slopes, a significant rock formation covering 10% of the land, established vegetation, and a flame zone designation due to bushfire risk.
While contemporary architectural strategies often accommodate challenging topographies, WWAA remains committed to honouring each client’s unique vision. The objective was to translate these aspirations into a stunning French-Style Mansion, overcoming site constraints through intelligent and responsive design.
Recognising that a custom-designed home represents a significant personal and financial investment, the project was approached with the same level of care and precision as if it were WWAA’s own. Through a thorough analysis of the family’s spatial and functional priorities, the importance of optimising efficiency to minimise waste and manage construction costs was identified. From the early design phases, a meticulous 3D terrain model was developed, enabling seamless integration of the residence into the existing contours and significantly reducing the need for extensive earthworks. Throughout the design refinement process, continuous dialogue with the clients ensured that every architectural detail was both aesthetically refined and functionally attuned to their daily living requirements.
WWAA thrives on the challenge of transforming ambitious architectural visions into reality. This project represents not just a home but an exploration of French architectural elegance tailored to the Australian landscape. Having successfully obtained Development Application (DA) approval, both WWAA and the clients eagerly anticipate witnessing the evolution of this remarkable residence. Updates will follow as this exceptional home takes shape.
